Jan 17, 2025
Happy Friday!
Welcome back to The Weekly Roll. As the year gets fully underway we’re starting to see the biggest stories of 2025 take shape. Take a look below to see what’s going on this week in cannabis and art:
Indiana Introduces Cannabis Legalization : Earlier this week a Republican-led coalition introduced a cannabis legalization bill in Indiana. The bill would legalize marijuana use for all residents over the age of 21, putting Indiana in a position to be the first-ever state to go straight to adult-use cannabis without a medical program. The bill is in the early stages right now and will face significant obstacles on the way to victory despite bi-partisan support. Proponents argue that citizens are calling for legalization and that they need to keep up with their neighbors and most of the country, while opponents argue going straight to an adult-use market before the federal government clarifies its position on cannabis would be a step too far. Rescheduling Rescheduled : The Rescheduling of Cannabis from a Schedule 1 substance to a Schedule 3 substance by the DEA is getting more complicated by the day. A judge overseeing the proceedings, which were supposed to begin on January 21, has just postponed the hearings for another 90 days amidst allegations against the DEA of multiple missteps including improper communication with pro-prohibition witnesses and selective inclusion of pro-rescheduling witnesses. This delay now means the DEA will be under new leadership during the next opportunity for hearings throwing the Biden Administration’s rescheduling proposal into further doubt. Article
Interesting Number : $1.64 Billion. Massachusetts retail sales in 2024, a new state record. The market opened in 2018 and has faced many challenges including leadership changes at the Cannabis Control Commission, but has managed to continue steady growth and stabilization. In 2025, there is hope for more progress with the addition of consumption lounges and the first full year of the one-driver rule for delivery operators. Articles
New Look for JFK : As part of the $4.2 Billion renovation of Terminal 6 of the JFK airport in New York, 19 artists have been selected for a public art commission. One of these pieces will be a 14-foot wide Bronze Medallion structure in the arrivals plaza done by Jane Dickson, which is part of the New York nonprofit Public Art Fund’s ongoing initiative to include art in public spaces. Other artists include Charles Gaines, Kambui Olujimi, Teresita Fernandez, and Nina Chanel Abney. Article
