Happy Friday!
Welcome back to The Weekly Roll. I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving yesterday! Here is what’s happening this week in cannabis and art:
Michigan Tax : The Michigan Cannabis Industry Association is challenging a new 24% wholesale tax on cannabis products, arguing it unconstitutionally amends the 2018 voter-approved ballot initiative that set a 10% excise tax without the required supermajority vote. Industry advocates warn the tax will hurt small businesses and boost the black market, while the state defends it as essential funding for road infrastructure that doesn't conflict with the existing retail tax. Medicare to try CBD? : Cannabis stocks rallied Wednesday after Bloomberg reported that the US Medicare program may soon cover CBD treatments for certain patients, particularly seniors in oncology and palliative care settings. Major cannabis companies saw gains of 1-4%, with the potential Medicare coverage representing a significant new revenue opportunity for the industry. The initiative follows President Trump's September endorsement of CBD coverage for seniors, describing it as a natural remedy that could extend lives. Article
Interesting Number : 91%. The sales increase on Green Wednesday in 2024 compared to a typical Wednesday, according to Dutchie. "Green Wednesday," the day before Thanksgiving, has become the second-highest sales day of the year for cannabis products after April 20, driven by deep discounts and Americans stocking up before holiday gatherings. Despite the surge in popularity as consumers increasingly swap alcohol for cannabis, health experts warn of potential risks including mental health challenges like paranoia and anxiety, as well as increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. Bob Ross Record : A Bob Ross painting sold for approximately $1,044,000 at John Oliver's benefit auction for public broadcasting, setting a new auction record for the beloved artist's work. Oliver organized the sale of Cabin at Sunset to raise funds after the Trump administration eliminated $1.1 billion from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting earlier this year. The auction, which included 65 items from Oliver's show and three additional Ross paintings, raised nearly $2.2 million. Article
