The Weekly Roll June 19th 2026

Happy Friday!

Welcome back to The Weekly Roll! I hope everyone had a lovely week, here is what’s happening this week in cannabis and art:

Guns and Cannabis : In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the federal ban on gun ownership for drug users is unconstitutional as applied to a Texas man who used marijuana regularly but wasn't intoxicated or violent at the time of his arrest. Justice Gorsuch wrote the ruling is narrow and doesn't affect bans on guns for addicts or those deemed dangerous, but advocates called it a major win for the millions of Americans who use cannabis. Article

Rigged Hearing? : The DEA selected only marijuana reform opponents — including Smart Approaches to Marijuana and four Republican-led states — to participate in this month's hearing on broader cannabis rescheduling, rejecting all reform-supporting groups that applied. Critics say the agency's "interested person" standard unfairly excluded patients and advocacy groups, leaving DEA to defend its own rule unopposed when the hearing begins June 29. Article

Interesting Number : states have collected over $28.4 billion in recreational marijuana tax revenue since 2012, with 2025 setting a record $4.5 billion in a single year. California led all states with over $1 billion collected in 2025 alone, though a separate analysis found the industry's overall national sales declined year-over-year for the first time since 2014. Article

Obama Center Opens: The $850 million Obama Presidential Center opened in Chicago's Hyde Park on Juneteenth, featuring a museum designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects alongside 28 site-specific commissions from artists including Mark Bradford, Maya Lin, Richard Hunt, and Martin Puryear. The museum chronicles Barack and Michelle Obama's journeys and the events of his presidency, with adult admission set at $30 ($26 for Illinois residents), though gardens, plazas, and the library remain free to the public. Article

Have a great weekend!
