Happy Friday!
Welcome back to The Weekly Roll. I hope everyone had an amazing July 4th last weekend! Here is what’s happening this week in cannabis and art:
Texas Hemp Update : Texas Governor Greg Abbott vetoed a bill that would have banned all consumable hemp products with THC traces, instead calling for a special legislative session to create comprehensive hemp regulations. Abbott's agenda includes criminalizing hemp sales to minors under 21 and establishing a regulatory framework similar to alcohol regulation, with potency limits and restrictions on synthetic compounds. The governor rejected an outright ban, proposing detailed regulations covering packaging, testing, and sales restrictions for what he called "a lawful agricultural commodity." Article
ICE Raids Cannabis : Federal immigration agents raided two state-licensed cannabis farms in California, using tear gas against protesters who clashed with authorities. The raids at Glass House Farms targeted illegal employees and discovered 10 juveniles at one facility, including 8 unaccompanied minors. Democratic officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the "military-style" tactics and demanded an end to such federal operations. Article
Interesting Number : 60. The percentage of Pennsylvania’s medical marijuana patients who qualified through anxiety after the condition was added in 2019. The research showed that adding anxiety significantly expanded the program overall, which now has 1.7 million patients, though researchers noted concerns about signaling cannabis effectiveness for anxiety despite limited evidence. This comes as Pennsylvania lawmakers continue debating adult-use legalization, with bipartisan efforts underway to create regulatory infrastructure and pass reform legislation. Article
OG Birkin Bag Sold : The first-ever Hermes Birkin bag sold for a record-breaking €8.6 million ($10 million) at Sotheby's Paris to an anonymous Japanese buyer after a 10-minute bidding war. The original bag, created for actress Jane Birkin, had been sold by her in 1994 to fund AIDS research and previously appeared in exhibitions at MoMA and the Victoria & Albert Museum. Sotheby's called the sale "an important milestone" for luxury fashion history, with sources suggesting Lauren Sanchez was an underbidder, though her representatives denied this. Article
Have a great weekend!
