Happy Friday!
Welcome back to The Weekly Roll. I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas! Here is what’s happening this week in cannabis and art:
SMART Approaches MA : Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) claims to be providing "multi-million-dollar support" to campaigns in Maine and Massachusetts that would end adult-use cannabis sales, which together total $1.8 billion annually. SAM founder Kevin Sabet announced the organization's involvement just after Trump's marijuana rescheduling order, though the group operates as a 501(c)4 organization that can conceal its donors under IRS rules. In Massachusetts, signature-gatherers for the campaign have been accused of using deceptive tactics, though courts have found such methods are protected by the First Amendment. Article
Rescheduling Update : President Trump's executive order to reclassify marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III would bring immediate tax relief for cannabis businesses by ending the punitive 280E tax code, but won't automatically revoke federal laws or legalize interstate commerce. The timeline for rescheduling depends on whether the Justice Department uses an expedited process under Section 811 of the Controlled Substances Act or follows the traditional public comment period. While rescheduling would ease some research barriers, scientists would still face challenges obtaining marijuana for studies, and issues like banking restrictions and credit card acceptance for cannabis businesses remain unresolved. Interesting Number : 70%. A new YouGov poll shows 70% of Americans support rescheduling marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III, with bipartisan backing including 78% of Democrats, 69% of independents, and 66% of Republicans. The survey, released after President Trump directed the attorney general to expedite the rescheduling process, also found 76% of respondents believe cannabis has legitimate medical uses. While rescheduling wouldn't legalize marijuana, it would acknowledge its medical value and allow businesses to take federal tax deductions. Article
Louvre Responds : The Louvre installed security bars on a window in the Galerie d'Apollon through which thieves entered during an October heist, stealing bejeweled objects that mostly remain unrecovered. The installation, completed just before Christmas as promised by museum leadership, is part of broader security improvements including 100 new cameras following public criticism of the museum's safeguards. The previous protective measure on the window had been removed during gallery restoration between 2003 and 2004. Article
Have a great weekend!
