Happy Friday!
Welcome back to The Weekly Roll! I hope everyone had a lovely week, here is what’s happening this week in cannabis and art:
Alabama Opens : Alabama launched its long-delayed medical cannabis program Tuesday with a single dispensary, Callie's Apothecary in Montgomery, five years after the legislature legalized it in 2021. Eleven more dispensaries across four licensed companies are expected to open this summer, though limited physician registration could create early access bottlenecks for the state's roughly 300 registered patients. Kentucky Expands Program : Governor Andy Beshear signed an executive order adding 15 new qualifying conditions for medical marijuana, including ALS, Parkinson's, HIV, fibromyalgia, and glaucoma, expanding on the previous list of just six conditions. The move aims to clarify ambiguous language in the existing law that had left many patients unsure whether they qualified. Article
Interesting Number : Michigan's 24% wholesale cannabis tax, meant to fund road repairs, generated only $34 million in its first quarter — less than a third of the $105 million quarterly projection. Industry groups say the tax is decimating legal businesses and pushing consumers toward the illicit market, and a legal challenge to the tax is currently pending in court. Article
Cutting the Pace : Pace Gallery has laid off 50 employees and dropped 50 artists — a 20% staff cut and 30% roster reduction — with CEO Marc Glimcher declaring the traditional gallery model "broken." The downsizing follows costly overexpansion into NFTs, immersive art venues, and international locations that largely failed to deliver. Article
Have a great weekend!
